This is a particular problem where there is a mismatch in seniority, or a
purchaser/provider relationship might exist. Reviewers must always declare any
competing interests, e.g. financial, material benefit, personal rivalry or
collaboration, honestly. If impartiality is in doubt the invitation to review should
be declined.
5.63. The rules of authorship can sometimes give rise to ethical difficulties in
publication. Views about authorship of original research papers have changed
in recent years. Some leading journals now support the concept
of contributorship, encouraging authors to describe their contribution to a
study and associated output explicitly. In order to be named as an author, an
individual should normally have contributed to the planning, analysis and
interpretation of a research study. It is not enough simply to have collected
data, or to be in a position of seniority in the research department. Guidance
on authorship is given by the International Committee of Medical Journal
Editors 90.
B. Training
5.64. Teaching is a critical element of occupational health to ensure sustainable
supply of occupational
health
professionals
with
sufficient
skills
and expertise to service the working age population. Teaching can happen in a
wide variety of context such as formal trainee / trainer relationship/supervision,
a training course, one / off teaching session or producing training materials.
The teacher can be of the same professional group of the person being
taught or different.
5.65. For the purpose of this guidance, the person who delivers the teaching is
referred to as the trainer and the person who receives the training is called
trainee. This is outwith the formal nomenclature in use such resident (post
graduate medical trainee), clinical or educational supervisor, tutor or practice
teacher but can include all of them.
5.66. The trainer should adhere to the relevant professional code of standards /
practise.
5.67. The relationship between trainee and trainer should be within appropriate
professional boundaries and avoid improper contact or relationships.
