Must – The term ‘must’ implies compulsion and is taken to mean that the
recommendation is the only acceptable way to ensure that the activity is
ethically appropriate.

Occupational Health Report - The term ‘occupational health report’ in the context of
this guidance means the written output of a health assessment by an occupational
health professional for employment purposes based on confidential information
provided by the worker or, with appropriate consent, a fellow occupational health
professional. This could form the output of a pre-employment health assessment, a
referral assessment or the production of the ‘health record’ following health
surveillance.
Occupational Health screening - Determines whether an individual can safely
perform a role and whether adjustments are required.
Occupational Health surveillance – Detects early adverse effects from identified
occupational exposures.
Pre-employment – The term ‘pre-employment' covers both the period between the
worker’s job application and the employer’s offer of employment, and the period
between the job offer and starting work (often called pre-placement). The purpose of
pre-employment health assessment is principally to identify those who may need
adjustments to the work environment and working practices to allow them to do the
job, or to protect them and others against risks arising from their work. In a minority
of cases, it will be necessary to reject those job applicants whose health condition or
disability renders them unfit. The term pe-employment is used in this document
should be read to include those assessments undertaken prior to individuals in
engaging in non-paid work – e.g. Volunteers, students requiring health clearance for
placements or courses.
