Thoroughly appraise any data or reports generated by AI before they are used
in clinical or advisory decision-making.
Ensure that the content is accurate, the tone is appropriate, and that irrelevant
or sensitive information is not over-shared.
Be alert to the risk of over-reliance on AI, particularly where outputs may lack
nuance or context.
Maintain clinical oversight and accountability, even when AI tools are
embedded in routine workflows.
2.47. Ultimately, AI should be viewed as a supportive tool, not a substitute for
professional expertise and human-centred decision making should remain
central within all processes. If using, accountability lies with the professional.
2.48. All AI tools utilised should be checked for IT data security to ensure there is no
possibility of data breach occurring when using within clinical consultations or
including worker identifiable information.
2.49. The use of robots can remove workers from hazardous situations, and more
disabled workers may be able to work in these fields due to reduced physical
demands.
2.50. Occupational Health Professionals need to be transparent about their use of AI.
For example: It should be clearly indicated when AI is being used to produce
reports from clinical records etc or when utilising a decision tree to provide an
outcome of an assessment. It is good practice to ensure that the use of AI is in
the OH Privacy Notice and all workers have access to this.
2.51. If clinical practice is to use AI, then the accountability lies with the Occupational
Health Professional. From a worker's perspective, Article 22 of the GDPR
indicates that if gives the option for an individual to opt out. Under Art. 22(4)
GDPR, automated decisions that are caught by Art. 22(1) GDPR cannot be based
on special category data (refer to Art. 9(1) GDPR) unless the data subject has
explicitly consented to this.
2.52. When Occupational health professionals are using AI for the purpose of
research, they must ensure that any information gained is reviewed to ensure
that this is accurate and check cited reference sources.
